Regulation of the Industry
Historically, organic certification and standard development has been through private non-government organizations based on voluntary participation.  The large growth in the organic market resulted in governments establishing legal definition of the term 'organic' and implementing enforcement mechanisms in regulating its use.

Organic Standards define the minimum production practices and handling requirements which must be followed for the resulting agricultural products to be labeled and sold as 'organic'.    Organic Standards establish common definitions, usually set by organic producers, handlers, retailers and consumers.

The IFOAM Basic Standards (www.ifoam.org) are international standards set by the private sector.  These standards set the framework within which regional , national and international certification and standard setting bodies develop their own standards.

The Organic Certification Process

Inspection is one step in the certification process and in addition to being familiar with the standards; it is important that the entire certification process is understood.  The JOAM certification program was launched in 2003 and a JOAM certification process developed.

Organic certification is the verification of an organic production system by a third party.  Logos are used to assure the consumer that a product has gone through an approved organic production system.
